Media Protection

As the swirl of media activity centers around Karl Rove, journalists are questioning their protection under the law. They strongly feel that anonymous sources are essential to good reporting. But my question is this: who is protecting US from them? What protection do we have when it comes to fabricating stories or sources? What protection do we have from slanted reporting? What protection do we have from journalists that openly ignore factual evidence?
