How Christians have hurt their cause

Several hot button issues remain at the forefront of politics: embryonic stem cell research, homosexual marriage, and abortion. Christians can't be selective when fighting for these issues, but our lack of selectivity in the past has harmed our credibility immensely.

The huge problem with embryonic stem cell research is that embryos- potential human life-is destroyed in the name of advanced medical science. Are there any other cases where embryos are destroyed? Yes, in fertility clinics. Infertility is a sympathetic issue and one that is unpredictable-we never know who will be infertile. Fertility clinics offer that last glimmer of hope in conceiving a child. But where have the Christians been in denouncing the destruction of unneeded embryos in our fertility clinics? If they've spoken out, I haven't heard. This double standard makes our arguments ring hollow when try to denounce embryonic stem cell research.

In fighting against homosexual marriage, the token line is that we want to 'protect the sanctity of marriage'. If that is a Christian agenda, how have we protected the sanctity of marriage in the past? Did we cry out by the thousands that divorce should not be allowed except in the case of infidelity? Today's divorce rate already threatens the sanctity of marriage, but we as Christians are not making huge waves about it. Our arguments that gay people seem to switch partners has no merit when 1 out of every 2 marriages will end up in divorce. Where were we when shows like "Who wants to marry a millionaire?" and "The Bachelor" made a mockery out of marriage? Did we cry out with the same passion that we currently cry out against homosexuality? When we are not consistent on all fronts, the enemy begins to quietly slice away at our values, so that when he goes in for his final kill, it's already too late. We Christians have let so much slide by that it appears to be pure hypocrisy when we finally decide to draw the line.
